BAFTA Noms: Bradley Cooper Breaks Clooney's Record

A Star Is Born is among top nominees for this year’s British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards (the BAFTAs), garnering seven nominations—including a history-making five for star and director Bradley Cooper (Best Film, Leading Actor, Best Director, Adapted Screenplay, Original Music).

A first in BAFTA’s 72 years, Cooper broke George Clooney’s long-standing record of four nominations, which he received in 2005 for his work on Good Night, and Good Luck (Best Director, Supporting Actor, and Screenplay) and also Syriana (Best Supporting Actor).

Alongside A Star Is Born in the Best Film category is Bohemian Rhapsody (which stole Star‘s thunder at the Golden Globes), 18th-century period picture The Favourite, Alfonso Cuarón’s critics’ darling Roma, Green Book (which just picked up a Golden Globe for the rising superstar Mahershala Ali), and BlackKkKlansman, which marks a first-ever BAFTA nod for Spike Lee.

Those who lamented last year that no women directors received Best Director nods in five years may now make that six, Variety noted.  Three actors of color (Mahershala Ali, Viola Davis, Rami Malek) out of 20 performers total received nominations, up from two last season.

Movie connoisseurs around the globe will be watching for BAFTA’s big winners to be announced on February 10 and continuing to buzz about what its honors mean for this year’s forthcoming Oscars.
