Booksmart: Fresh, Laugh-Out-Loud High School Buddy Com

Booksmart is a whip-smart, laugh-out-loud funny and moving ride centered around high school-over-achievers Amy and Molly (Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein)—two besties on a mission to party their last night before graduation to the absolute fullest.

First-time director Olivia Wilde steers us through a hilarious tapestry of classmates, parents, more played by an ensemble of veterans and promising newcomers.

Booksmart Stars Kaitlyn Dever, Beanie Feldstein Deliver Grade-A Comedy

Jason Sudeikis (SNL, Horrible Bosses) as the school’s amusingly dis-engaged principal and Comedy Central alum Jessica Williams playing a popular young teacher are among standouts. Actress Billie Lourde shines as class party queen Gigi, who may feels to Almost Famous film fans like a glimpse of who Penny Lane would be had we met her in high school.

Peer pressure. Fear and fitting in. Discovering one’s sexuality. Identity. The college admissions race. The nerve-testing politics and life-affirming rewards of best-friendship.

Hitting all the classic campus comedy notes with fresh eyes for this generation and deft pacing, Wilde and ensemble do us the good service of prioritizing authenticity over everything and deliver with tons of heart.

Whether you’re in high school right now, or your campus days are way in your rear-view, go see Booksmart.

Booksmart opens in theaters May 24, 2019.
